Q: Atul, as the CEO of Goodricke Group Ltd., you’re leading one of the most renowned tea companies in India. Can you share what inspired your journey into the tea industry and your role at Goodricke?

Atul Asthana: My journey into the tea industry was somewhat serendipitous. I’ve always been drawn to industries that have a rich heritage and a deep connection with culture, and the tea industry is just that. Goodricke, with its legacy of producing some of the finest teas, presented an opportunity for me to be part of something truly special. Taking on the role of CEO was both an honor and a challenge. My focus has always been on maintaining the high standards that Goodricke is known for while also driving innovation and sustainability in our practices.

Q: Goodricke has a storied legacy in the tea industry. How do you balance preserving this heritage while also pushing for innovation?

Atul Asthana: Balancing heritage with innovation is key to our strategy at Goodricke. The tea industry is steeped in tradition, and we are proud of our legacy, but we also recognize the need to evolve. This means respecting the traditional methods of tea cultivation and production while also embracing modern technology to enhance quality and efficiency. For instance, we’ve invested in sustainable farming practices and digital tools to better monitor crop health. Innovation for us isn’t about replacing the old with the new—it’s about finding ways to improve and build upon our heritage.

Q: Sustainability is a hot topic in today’s business world. How does Goodricke incorporate sustainability into its operations?

Atul Asthana: Sustainability is not just a trend for us; it’s a responsibility. At Goodricke, we are deeply committed to sustainable practices across all aspects of our operations. This starts from the very beginning with our tea plantations, where we employ environmentally friendly farming techniques to ensure that our tea is produced with minimal impact on the environment. We are also focused on improving the livelihoods of our workers through fair wages, healthcare, and education initiatives. By prioritizing sustainability, we are not only protecting the environment but also ensuring the long-term success of our business and the communities we operate in.

Q: The tea industry has faced various challenges, particularly with changing consumer preferences and market dynamics. How is Goodricke adapting to these changes?

Atul Asthana: The tea industry, like many others, is evolving rapidly. Consumers today are more discerning—they’re looking for premium quality, unique flavors, and ethically produced products. At Goodricke, we’ve adapted by expanding our product range to include specialty teas and organic options that cater to these new preferences. Additionally, we’ve increased our focus on direct-to-consumer channels and e-commerce, allowing us to reach a broader audience. By staying attuned to market trends and consumer demands, we’re able to remain competitive and relevant in a changing landscape.

Q: Looking ahead, what are your goals for Goodricke in the coming years?

Atul Asthana: Our primary goal is to continue growing Goodricke’s brand as a symbol of quality and sustainability in the global tea market. We plan to expand our presence in international markets, especially in regions where the demand for premium tea is rising. Additionally, we will keep investing in our people and our plantations to ensure that we continue producing the highest quality tea while also contributing positively to our environment and society. Innovation, sustainability, and heritage will remain at the core of everything we do as we look to the future.
